Job and exam forms in Pakistan usually ask for your age “as on” a fixed date, most often the closing date for applications. To work it out, count the full years from your date of birth to that date, then the full months after that, then the remaining days. Someone born on 14 March 2001 is 25 years, 8 months and 16 days old as on 30 November 2026.
Why the “as on” date matters
An age limit such as “18 to 30 years” only makes sense against a fixed date. If age were checked on the day each person applied, two candidates born on the same day could be eligible or not depending on when they filled the form. So the advertisement names one date, and everyone’s age is measured on it. Always read the advertisement carefully: some use the closing date, some a fixed date such as 1 January, and some the date of the test.
The years, months and days method
- Years: count how many birthdays you have had up to the “as on” date. If your birthday this year hasn’t come yet by that date, it’s the current year minus your birth year minus one.
- Months: from your last birthday, count whole months up to the “as on” date.
- Days: count the remaining days from that point to the “as on” date.
Count forward in steps like this rather than subtracting day, month and year columns. Forward counting handles months of different lengths without any confusion.
Worked example 1
Date of birth: 14 March 2001. Age as on: 30 November 2026.
- 14 March 2001 to 14 March 2026 = 25 years.
- 14 March 2026 to 14 November 2026 = 8 months.
- 14 November to 30 November = 16 days.
Age: 25 years, 8 months, 16 days.
Worked example 2 (crossing a year end)
Date of birth: 28 September 1996. Age as on: 15 January 2027.
- 28 September 1996 to 28 September 2026 = 30 years.
- 28 September 2026 to 28 December 2026 = 3 months.
- 28 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 = 3 days left in December plus 15 in January = 18 days.
Age: 30 years, 3 months, 18 days. If the post has an upper limit of 30 years, whether this candidate qualifies depends on the exact wording, which is why it’s worth reading the rules closely (see below).
Birthdays on 29 February
If you were born on 29 February, in a non-leap year most offices treat 28 February as your birthday for counting full years, though some use 1 March. If you are right at the edge of a limit, ask the department or check their rules.
Upper age limits and relaxation
Government jobs have a minimum and a maximum age. Relaxation of the upper limit is allowed for some posts and categories, for example for serving government employees or residents of certain areas. The rules differ between federal and provincial governments and between departments, and they are updated from time to time, so rely only on the advertisement and the recruiting body’s current rules.
Read the wording carefully. “Not more than 30 years” is usually read as up to the day before your 31st birthday, while “must not have attained the age of 30” means you must still be 29. A few days can make the difference.
CSS age limit
For the CSS exam, the general age limit is 21 to 30 years, with relaxation for certain categories as notified. Per FPSC rules, age is counted on a fixed cut-off date, so check the current notice before you apply. See the CSS 2027 study plan and the CSS countdown.
Quick check with a calculator
The age calculator gives your exact age in years, months and days on any date: enter your date of birth and set the “as on” date to the closing date in the advertisement. The date duration calculator gives the total number of days between two dates if a form asks for that instead. For example, as on November 30, 2026, a person born on 1 January 2000 has lived 9,830 days.
Common mistakes
- Using today’s date instead of the “as on” date.
- Rounding up: a person aged 30 years and 11 months is still 30, not 31.
- Using a date of birth different from the one on your CNIC or matriculation certificate. Recruiters go by your documents.
Frequently asked questions
What does age as on a date mean?
It means your age measured on that specific date, usually the closing date for applications, rather than on the day you fill the form.
How do I calculate age in years, months and days?
Count full years to your last birthday before the date, then whole months, then the remaining days. The age calculator does this instantly.
What is the age limit for CSS?
Generally 21 to 30 years, with relaxation for some categories. Per FPSC rules, check the current notice for the cut-off date and terms.
Is age counted from the CNIC date of birth?
Yes, recruiters normally use the date of birth on your CNIC or matriculation certificate.
