How to count 90 days yourself

Start from the day after your start date and count forward, month by month. From 1 March 2026: 30 days to 31 March, 30 more to 30 April (60), 30 more to 30 May. So 90 days after 1 March 2026 is Saturday, May 30, 2026.

Note that 90 days is not the same as 3 months. Three months from 1 March is 1 June, which is 92 days later. When a rule says “90 days”, count days; when it says “3 months”, go to the same date three months on.

Counting conventions

  • Exclusive (most calculators): the start date is day 0 and the day after is day 1. 90 days from today ends on January 4.
  • Inclusive (many visa and stay rules): the first day counts as day 1, so a 90-day stay starting today ends on January 3.
  • Business days: some deadlines skip weekends and holidays; 90 business days is roughly 18 weeks. See how to count business days.

Visas: the Schengen 90/180 rule

Visitors to the Schengen area of Europe on a short-stay visa, or visa-free, may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The 180-day window rolls: on any day you are in the area, look back over the last 180 days, including that day, and add up every day you spent inside. The total must not go over 90. The days of entry and exit both count as full days.

This means you cannot simply leave for a day and start a fresh 90 days. Someone who spent 60 days in the Schengen area recently has only 30 days left until enough of those earlier days drop out of the window. The European Commission publishes an official short-stay calculator, which is the safest way to check before booking.

Other countries set their own visit lengths and counting rules. Always check the official immigration website of the country you are visiting.

Notice periods

Job and tenancy notice periods are often given in days, weeks or months. The length is set by your contract and local law, so it varies widely. Check two things: whether notice starts on the day you hand it in or the next day, and whether it is written in calendar days or working days. If a contract says “one month”, it usually means the same date next month, not 30 days.

Return windows and payment terms

  • Returns: shops and online stores set their own return windows, commonly counted from the delivery date rather than the order date.
  • Invoices: “Net 30”, “Net 60” or “Net 90” means payment is due that many calendar days after the invoice date.
  • Warranties and guarantees are often 90 days or 6 months; keep the receipt showing the start date.
  • Probation periods at work are frequently set at 90 days or 3 months.
