A year has 52 weeks and 1 day. A leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days. In exact terms, 365 days divided by 7 is 52.14 weeks, and 366 days is 52.29 weeks. So the everyday answer is 52 weeks, but some calendars and payrolls end up with a 53rd week, and that is where most of the confusion comes from.
Where the extra day comes from
Seven times 52 is 364. A normal year has 365 days, so one day is left over. A leap year has 366 days, so two days are left over. Those spare days are the reason your birthday moves forward one weekday each year, and two weekdays after a 29 February.
The leftover days also mean that one or two days of the week appear 53 times in a year instead of 52. In 2026, for example, the day that appears 53 times is Thursday, while every other weekday appears 52 times.
When a year has 53 weeks
Under the ISO 8601 standard, which most of Europe, the UK and many businesses use for week numbers, weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week that contains the year’s first Thursday. With that rule, a year has 53 weeks when:
- 1 January falls on a Thursday, or
- it is a leap year and 1 January falls on a Wednesday.
This happens 71 times every 400 years, so roughly once every five or six years. In the next ten years, the 53-week ISO years are 2026 and 2032. You can see the current week number on our what week is it page.

The Fridays column matters if you are paid weekly on a Friday: a year with 53 Fridays means 53 pay packets in that calendar year.
The 53rd week in payroll and accounts
Weekly payroll runs on a fixed weekday, so any year in which that weekday appears 53 times has 53 pay dates. For employees on an annual salary paid weekly, employers usually either divide the salary by 52 and pay one extra week, or divide by 53 so that the yearly total stays the same. Which approach applies depends on the contract, so check with your employer rather than assuming.
Fortnightly pay works the same way. Fourteen days into 365 gives 26 pay dates most years, and roughly every 11 years there are 27. Monthly pay is not affected, since there are always 12 months. Our payday calendar lists the actual dates.
Retailers and many companies also use a 52–53 week financial year (often called a 4-4-5 calendar), where the year always ends on the same weekday. Every five or six years they add a 53rd week to stay in line with the calendar, which is why year-on-year sales figures sometimes come with a note about an extra week.
Counting weeks in your head
To turn days into weeks, divide by 7: 100 days is 14 weeks and 2 days. To turn weeks into days, multiply by 7: 40 weeks is 280 days, the length doctors use to estimate a full-term pregnancy from the first day of the last period. For hours, one week is 168 hours, and a year is 8,760 hours (8,784 in a leap year).
Weeks in a month and a quarter
A month has 4 weeks plus 0 to 3 days: February in a normal year is exactly 4 weeks, while a 31-day month is 4 weeks and 3 days. On average a month is 4.35 weeks (52.18 ÷ 12). A quarter is about 13 weeks, which is why 13-week periods are popular for planning.
