How gold price is worked out
In Pakistan, gold is usually quoted per tola of 24 karat gold. A tola is 11.6638 grams, so a rate per 10 grams × 1.16638 gives the rate per tola. Jewellery is mostly 22 or 21 karat, which has less pure gold, so its gold value is the 24K price × karat ÷ 24. For example, 22K is 22/24 = 91.7% pure.
Shops then add making charges (mazdoori), either as a percentage, a fixed amount per tola or gram, or a total for the piece. When you sell old jewellery back, many jewellers take off a deduction (often called khaad or katauti) for impurity and wear, so you get less than the gold value. Ask what deduction applies before you sell.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a 10 gram rate to a tola rate?
Multiply by 1.16638. A rate per 10 grams of Rs 300,000 equals Rs 349,914 per tola.
What is the price of 22 karat gold?
Take the 24 karat rate and multiply by 22 ÷ 24 (about 0.917). Some markets quote a separate 22K rate, which you can type in with 24K selected.
Why is the shop price higher than the gold value?
Because of making charges for the design and work. Compare the gold value and making charges separately when you shop.
Why do I get less when I sell gold?
Jewellers usually deduct a percentage for impurity, stones and wear, and don’t pay back making charges.
