How to calculate hours between two times

Turn both times into minutes after midnight, subtract the start from the end, then take off your break. From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30 minute break leaves 8 hours. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift crossed midnight, so add 24 hours: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours.

Decimal hours

Payroll often uses decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, and 7 hours 20 minutes is 7.33 hours. Multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate to get pay. The calculator shows both.

Overtime

Rules differ by country, employer and contract. The calculator treats any hours above your weekly limit as overtime and pays them at 1.5 times the rate if you enter one; check your own contract for the right limit and rate.
