1 maund = 40 kg in Pakistan’s grain markets and in government crop prices today. The traditional maund (mann), made of 40 seer, is 37.324 kg. When a wheat, rice or cotton price is quoted “per maund”, it almost always means 40 kg; the older 37.3 kg maund turns up in old records, some village trade and when people speak of seer.
The two maunds
The traditional system is built on the tola. One seer is 80 tola, or about 0.933 kg, and one maund is 40 seer, about 37.324 kg. When the country moved to metric weights, the market maund was simply rounded to 40 kilograms, which is easier to weigh and price.
- Market or metric maund: 40 kg. Used for official support prices, mandi rates and most trade.
- Traditional maund: 40 seer = 37.324 kg. Our maund to kg converter uses this definition.
The gap is about 2.68 kg per maund, or about 7%. On a truck of 500 maunds that is over 1,300 kg, so agree which maund you mean before you sign.
Seer, paao and chattank
Older people still buy milk, ghee, vegetables or sweets by the seer and paao. These units come from the same traditional system:
| Unit | Equals | Kilograms | Grams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 chattank | 1/16 seer | 0.058 | 58.3 |
| 1 paao | 1/4 seer (4 chattank) | 0.233 | 233.3 |
| 1 seer | 80 tola (16 chattank) | 0.933 | 933.1 |
| 5 seer | 1/8 maund | 4.666 | 4,665.5 |
| 1 maund | 40 seer | 37.324 | 37,324.2 |
In everyday shopping, “a paao” is often treated as 250 grams and “a seer” as one kilo, since shops weigh in metric units now. For exact work use the seer to kg converter.

A metric ton is exactly 25 market maunds, which makes conversion simple: tons × 25 = maunds. With the traditional maund, a ton is about 26.79 maunds.
Converting a price per maund to a price per kg
This is the most common reason people look up the maund. Divide the price per maund by 40 to get the price per kg:
- Price per kg = price per maund ÷ 40
- Price per maund = price per kg × 40
- Price per ton = price per maund × 25
Example only: if wheat were Rs 4,000 per maund, it would cost Rs 100 per kg and Rs 100,000 per ton. If the same price were for the traditional 37.324 kg maund, the per-kg cost would be Rs 107.17. Official support prices are announced by the federal and provincial governments each season, so check the latest notification rather than relying on an old figure.
Kilograms back to maunds and seer
To go the other way, divide kilograms by 40 for market maunds; the remainder is in kilograms. A load of 1,250 kg is 31 maunds and 10 kg. In the traditional system, divide by 37.324 for maunds, then turn the leftover kilograms into seer by dividing by 0.933: 1,250 kg is 33 maunds and about 20 seer.
Old family recipes are another place these units appear. A recipe asking for “a paao of ghee” meant about 233 grams, and “a chattank of sugar” about 58 grams, so 250 g and 60 g are close enough in a modern kitchen.
When buying at a shop that still prices by the seer, ask whether they mean a kilo or the old 933 gram seer. Most shops today mean a kilo, but it is worth a quick question on large orders of ghee, milk or sweets.
Worked example: a harvest
A farmer gets 42 maunds of wheat per acre from 10 acres. That is 420 maunds, or 16,800 kg, or 16.8 metric tons. If the buyer pays Rs 4,000 per 40 kg maund (example price), the crop brings Rs 1,680,000.
Land units come up in the same sums, so see our guide to kanal, acre and murabba as well. The unit converter has every weight unit in one place, and the percentage calculator helps compare price changes between seasons.
