Asr Time: Why Hanafi and Shafi’i Times Differ

Hanafi Asr starts later than Shafi’i Asr because of one difference in the shadow rule. In the Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali schools, Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its own length (plus its noon shadow). In the Hanafi school, it begins when the shadow is twice the object’s length (plus the noon shadow). In Lahore today the gap is 50 minutes: Shafi’i Asr at 3:11 PM, Hanafi Asr at 4:01 PM.

The shadow rule explained

Stand a stick upright in the sun. At solar noon its shadow is at its shortest, and in Pakistan it is never zero, because the sun is never directly overhead at noon except near the tropics. Call that shortest shadow the noon shadow.

As the afternoon goes on, the shadow grows. Both views agree that Asr starts when the shadow has grown by a set amount beyond the noon shadow:

  • Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanbali (often called “standard” or “Asr Awwal” in apps): extra shadow equal to one object length.
  • Hanafi (“Asr Thani” in some apps): extra shadow equal to two object lengths.

Both positions come from the hadith literature on the times of prayer, and both are followed by large numbers of Muslims. Scholars of each school have explained their reasoning for centuries, and neither view makes the other’s prayer invalid. Most mosques in Pakistan follow the Hanafi time.

Today’s Asr times in Pakistan

Calculated for Tuesday, October 6, 2026 with the Karachi method:

CityShafi’i AsrHanafi AsrGapMaghrib
Lahore3:11 PM4:01 PM50 min5:41 PM
Karachi3:42 PM4:35 PM52 min6:14 PM
Islamabad3:15 PM4:04 PM50 min5:45 PM
Peshawar3:21 PM4:10 PM50 min5:51 PM
Quetta3:41 PM4:31 PM51 min6:11 PM
Multan3:23 PM4:13 PM51 min5:53 PM

The gap is not a fixed number. It depends on how high the sun climbs, which changes with the season and with latitude. Karachi, further south, has a different gap from Peshawar or Islamabad on the same day.

How the gap changes through the year

When the sun is low, as in winter, shadows grow quickly in the afternoon, so the second shadow length is reached sooner after the first. In summer the sun is high and the afternoon is long, so the gap widens. For Lahore:

DateShafi’i AsrHanafi AsrGap
October 6, 20263:11 PM4:01 PM50 min
January 5, 20272:54 PM3:35 PM41 min
April 6, 20273:38 PM4:37 PM58 min
July 6, 20273:46 PM5:02 PM76 min

Across these dates the gap in Lahore ranges from about 41 to 76 minutes. That is why someone used to Hanafi times can be surprised when a travel app shows Asr nearly an hour early.

Which one should you follow?

Most people follow the school they were raised in or the practice of their local mosque. If you pray at home, set your app to match the mosque you usually attend so your times line up. In practice:

  • If you follow the Hanafi school, as most people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Turkey do, use the later time.
  • If you follow the Shafi’i, Maliki or Hanbali school, use the earlier time.
  • When travelling, check which rule the local mosques use before assuming a time is wrong.

The time when Asr ends is also discussed: it is widely agreed that delaying it until the sun turns yellow and weak, shortly before sunset, is disliked without a reason.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Asr later in Pakistan than in Saudi Arabia apps?

Pakistan mostly follows the Hanafi rule, where Asr begins when a shadow is twice an object’s length. Saudi timetables use the single-length rule, which comes earlier.

What is Asr Awwal and Asr Thani?

Asr Awwal is the first, earlier time used by the Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali schools. Asr Thani is the second, later time used by the Hanafi school.

Can a Hanafi pray Asr at the Shafi’i time?

Scholars within the Hanafi school differ on this, and some allow it when there is a need, such as travel. Ask a scholar you trust about your own situation.

How big is the gap between Hanafi and Shafi’i Asr?

In Pakistan it is usually somewhere between about 40 minutes and over an hour, depending on the season and the city. See today’s exact times on our prayer times pages.
