Saudi Arabia, where Hajj takes place, is expected to mark Eid ul Adha on Sunday, May 16, 2027, one day earlier than Pakistan. The Hajj itself follows the Saudi calendar.

The Day of Arafah

On 9 Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafat from midday until sunset. It is the central rite of Hajj. Muslims who are not on Hajj are encouraged to fast on this day, and many in Pakistan do. Our Day of Arafah countdown shows the expected date.

Scholars differ on whether people outside Saudi Arabia should fast on their own local 9 Dhul Hijjah or on the day pilgrims are at Arafat. Most people in Pakistan follow the local calendar announced by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

The first ten days

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are regarded as among the best days of the year for good deeds. Many people who intend to sacrifice an animal also avoid cutting their hair and nails from the sighting of the moon until their qurbani is done. Scholars differ on whether this is recommended or required.

Three days of qurbani

In the Hanafi school, which most people in Pakistan follow, qurbani can be performed on 10, 11 and 12 Dhul Hijjah, after the Eid prayer on the first day. The Shafi’i school, and some other scholars, also allow the 13th. The meat is traditionally divided into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for people in need.

Qurbani is due on an adult Muslim who owns wealth at or above the nisab during these days. The nisab is the same one used for zakat: 52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold, or their value.

When to buy your animal

Cattle markets (mandis) in the big cities usually open on the outskirts about three to four weeks before Eid. A rough timeline:

  • Six to eight weeks before (around March 29): decide on goat, sheep or a share in a cow or camel, and set a budget. If you are joining a group for a cow, agree on the seven shares now.
  • Three to four weeks before (around April 22): mandis open and choice is widest. Prices are often steadier early, but you’ll need space and fodder to keep the animal.
  • Last week (from May 10): most buying happens now. Prices can swing either way depending on supply.
  • Before Eid: book a butcher well in advance. Rates are highest on the first day of Eid and lower on the second and third.

Check the animal’s age and health: the commonly cited minimums are one year for a goat or sheep, two years for a cow or buffalo and five years for a camel. Ask a scholar about specific defects that make an animal unsuitable.

Eid ul Adha holidays

The federal government usually announces three or four days off for Eid ul Adha. Based on the expected date, the holidays would start on Monday, May 17, 2027. The final notification comes once the moon is sighted. See all the year’s dates on Pakistan public holidays.
