Tola to Gram: How Many Grams in 1 Tola?

1 tola = 11.6638 grams (11.6638038 g to be exact). To convert tola to grams, multiply by 11.6638. To convert grams to tola, divide by 11.6638, so 10 grams is about 0.857 tola. This is the standard tola used by jewellers and gold markets in Pakistan and India.

Masha and ratti in grams

Jewellers in Pakistan still describe small weights in masha and ratti, especially for rings, nose pins and earrings. A masha is one twelfth of a tola (about 0.972 g) and a ratti is one eighth of a masha (about 0.1215 g).

So a ring of “4 masha 2 ratti” weighs 4 × 0.972 + 2 × 0.1215 = about 4.13 grams. The masha to grams converter handles these odd amounts quickly.

Converting a mixed weight

Jewellers often write a weight as tola, masha and ratti together, such as 2 tola 4 masha 3 ratti. Convert each part to grams and add them up, or turn everything into ratti first (1 tola = 96 ratti, 1 masha = 8 ratti) and multiply by 0.1215.

For 2 tola 4 masha 3 ratti: 2 × 96 + 4 × 8 + 3 = 227 ratti, and 227 × 0.1215 = 27.58 grams. Going back the other way, divide grams by 11.6638 for whole tola, then turn the remainder into masha (÷ 0.972) and ratti (÷ 0.1215). It is worth asking your jeweller to write the gram weight on the receipt too, since that is easier to check on any digital scale.

Modern jewellery is often stamped or weighed in grams, while your family may still talk in tola. Divide the grams by 11.6638:

A useful shortcut: 10 grams is roughly 0.86 tola, and 100 grams is about 8.57 tola. A one-ounce gold coin or bar (31.1 g) is about 2.667 tola.

Converting a 10-gram gold rate to a tola rate

Gold rates in Pakistan are usually announced both per tola and per 10 grams, while many international and Indian sources quote only per 10 grams or per gram. Because 1 tola is 1.16638 times 10 grams, the conversion is simple:

• Rate per tola = rate per 10 g × 1.16638
• Rate per 10 g = rate per tola ÷ 1.16638
• Rate per gram = rate per tola ÷ 11.6638

Example only (not a live price): if 24-karat gold were Rs 300,000 per 10 grams, one tola would cost about Rs 349,914, and one gram about Rs 30,000. Always check the day’s rate from your local sarafa association or a trusted jeweller, since prices change through the day.

The weight of a tola never changes, but the gold inside it depends on purity. Karat tells you how many parts out of 24 are pure gold:
