What the day marks
Rabi ul Awal is the third month of the Islamic calendar. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born in this month in Makkah, in the year known as the Year of the Elephant, around 570 CE. In South Asia, the 12th of Rabi ul Awal is the date most widely accepted as his birthday, and it is often called Barah Wafat or Eid Milad-un-Nabi.
Historians and scholars have given other dates too, such as the 9th of the month. Many sources also give 12 Rabi ul Awal as the date of his passing in 11 AH.
A public holiday in Pakistan
12 Rabi ul Awal is a federal public holiday. Government offices, banks, schools and most businesses close. In 2027 it is expected on a Sunday, so it will overlap with the weekend for many people. It falls 1 day after the 80th Independence Day on 14 August if the expected date holds, so the two occasions come close together in 2027. How it is observed
- Decorations. Homes, mosques, streets and markets are decorated with green flags and lights, often from the start of the month.
- Gatherings. Mehfil-e-Milad and naat gatherings are held, especially on the night before the 12th, with talks on the life and character of the Prophet.
- Processions. Rallies and processions take place in many cities on the 12th, and some roads are closed for the day.
- Charity and food. Many people distribute food and sweets and give to those in need.
- Official observance. A gun salute is traditionally fired in the federal and provincial capitals in the morning.
Differing scholarly views
Muslims agree on the importance of loving the Prophet and learning about his life. They differ on how, or whether, his birthday should be marked. Many scholars in Pakistan, particularly in the Barelvi tradition, encourage celebrating the day as an expression of love and gratitude. Others, including many Deobandi and Ahl-e-Hadith scholars, hold that a special celebration of the birthday was not part of early practice, and prefer to focus on following his example throughout the year.
These are long-standing differences among sincere scholars. Most people follow the guidance of their own mosque and family, and many who do not join celebrations still use the month to read the seerah, the story of his life.
