Pakistan’s Independence Day falls on Saturday, August 14, 2027, and it is 312 days away, or about 44 weeks and 4 days. It marks the 80th anniversary of independence on 14 August 1947, a milestone birthday the country will mark with extra celebration.
Because Saturday is a weekend day for most offices, the holiday will not create a long weekend in 2027, but it will be a full day for flag-hoisting, family outings and the evening lights.
What happened on 14 August 1947
Pakistan came into being when British rule over the Indian subcontinent ended in August 1947. The Indian Independence Act, passed by the British Parliament in July 1947, created two independent dominions, Pakistan and India. Pakistan’s independence was marked on 14 August, and India’s on 15 August.
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Quaid-e-Azam, became Pakistan’s first Governor-General, and Liaquat Ali Khan its first Prime Minister. The new country had two wings, West Pakistan and East Pakistan, separated by about 1,600 kilometres of Indian territory. Its first capital was Karachi.
Independence came with enormous upheaval. Millions of people crossed the new borders in both directions, and the partition was marked by widespread violence. Many families in Pakistan still tell the stories of grandparents who migrated in 1947, and those memories are part of how the day is remembered.
The national flag, dark green with a white vertical band, a crescent and a star, was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 11 August 1947, just days before independence. The national anthem, Qaumi Tarana, with words by Hafeez Jalandhari, was officially adopted in 1954, and today it opens almost every Independence Day ceremony.
Why 2027 is a special anniversary
Round-number anniversaries tend to bring bigger official events, commemorative stamps and coins, and special programming on television. The 75th anniversary in 2022 was marked as the Diamond Jubilee. For the 80th, expect similar national messaging, though the details are announced by the government closer to the date.
How Independence Day is celebrated
- Flag-hoisting: the day starts with the national flag being raised at the Parliament and the Presidency in Islamabad and at government buildings across the country, along with the national anthem.
- Gun salutes: salutes are fired in the federal capital and the provincial capitals in the morning.
- Change of guards: ceremonies are held at the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi and at Allama Iqbal’s tomb in Lahore.
- Wagah border: the daily flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah near Lahore draws especially big crowds.
- Lights and green: homes, markets and government buildings are lit up, streets are decorated with green and white flags and bunting, and children wear green.
- Schools and fireworks: schools hold events before the holiday, and many cities have fireworks at midnight on the night of 13 to 14 August.
The weeks before 14 August are busy for stalls selling flags, badges and car decorations. If you’re organising a school event or a community function, the weeks until Independence Day page helps with planning, and the Independence Day countdown shows the days, hours and minutes left.
Independence Day and the 2027 calendar
In 2027, Eid Milad-un-Nabi is expected on Sunday, August 15, 2027, the day after Independence Day, depending on the moon. That could mean two public holidays back to back in mid-August. You can see the full list in our guide to Pakistan public holidays in 2027.
A short timeline
| Year | Anniversary |
|---|---|
| 1947 | Independence |
| 1972 | 25th |
| 1997 | 50th (Golden Jubilee) |
| 2022 | 75th (Diamond Jubilee) |
| 2027 | 80th |
| 2047 | 100th (centenary) |
A simple way to work out any anniversary is to subtract 1947 from the year. For 2027 that is 2027 − 1947 = 80. Anyone born on 14 August 1947 turns 80 on the day as well; you can check exact ages with the age calculator.
Planning for the day
Markets get very busy in the last week before 14 August, so buy flags and decorations early. Expect heavy traffic in the evening of the 13th and on the 14th around famous spots such as the Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore, Sea View in Karachi and the Shakarparian and F-9 Park areas of Islamabad. If you are driving, keep in mind that some roads near official venues may be closed for ceremonies in the morning.
