How the required run rate works

Required run rate = runs needed ÷ overs left. With a target of 281 and a score of 142 after 26.2 overs in a 50-over game, the team needs 139 runs from 23.4 overs (142 balls): 139 ÷ 23.667 = 5.87 an over.

The target is one more than the other side’s total. If rain cuts the match, the target changes; use the DLS calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What does RRR mean in cricket?

Required run rate: the average runs per over the batting side needs from now on to reach the target.

Is the target the same as the other team’s score?

No. The target is one run more than the first innings total, because scores level is a tie.

What happens if the required rate goes above 12?

In ODIs that is very hard to chase; in T20s rates of 12 or more are sometimes achieved over a few overs.
