How run rate is calculated
Run rate = runs ÷ overs. Overs are counted in balls first: 23.4 overs is 23 overs and 4 balls, or 142 balls, which is 23.667 overs. So 156 runs in 23.4 overs is 156 ÷ 23.667 = 6.59 runs per over.
A common mistake is dividing by 23.4 as a decimal; that gives 6.67, which is wrong because an over has 6 balls, not 10.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good run rate in ODIs?
Most ODI totals today come at 5.5 to 6.5 runs an over across the innings; anything above 6 is usually a strong score.
How do I convert 23.4 overs into a number?
Take the balls as sixths of an over: 23.4 = 23 + 4/6 = 23.667 overs. Never treat .4 as 0.4.
Is run rate the same as strike rate?
No. Run rate is runs per over for a team; strike rate is runs per 100 balls for a batter.
