How the projection works

The simple projection adds the current run rate for the remaining overs: 148 after 28 overs (5.29 an over) projects to about 148 + 5.29 × 22 = 264. Teams usually score faster at the end, so the table also shows totals at higher rates.

The “wickets in hand” figure uses the DLS resource table: it scales the runs still to come by how much batting a side has left compared with an average team, so a side with many wickets lost projects lower. It’s an estimate, not a forecast; real totals depend on the pitch, the batters and the bowling.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a projected score?

It is only a guide. A collapse or a late burst can change the total a lot, especially in T20s.

Why does the projection drop after a wicket?

Fewer wickets in hand means fewer resources, so the team is expected to score less in the remaining overs.

How do TV broadcasters project scores?

Usually by multiplying the remaining overs by the current rate and a few faster rates, much like the table here.
