How it works
Volumetric weight = total volume × a density the carrier sets. Courier and air cargo use a divisor on cubic centimetres (5,000 or 6,000). Road freight often counts 1 CBM as 333 kg, and sea freight counts 1 CBM as 1,000 kg.
The carrier bills the higher of the actual and volumetric weight. "Billed" marks where size costs you more than weight.
Frequently asked questions
Is volumetric weight the same as dimensional weight?
Yes. Volumetric weight and dimensional (DIM) weight mean the same thing.
Why is sea freight 1 CBM = 1,000 kg?
Sea freight is priced per revenue ton: one cubic metre or one tonne, whichever is more.
