To calculate your GPA, multiply each course’s credit hours by the grade points you earned, add those up, and divide by the total credit hours: GPA = Σ(credit hours × grade points) ÷ Σ credit hours. CGPA is the same calculation across all your semesters together. In Pakistan, most universities use the Higher Education Commission’s 4.0 scale, shown below.
Our GPA and CGPA calculator does this for you, but it’s worth knowing how the numbers work so you can check your transcript and plan your grades.
The HEC grading scale
This is the scale in the HEC semester system guidelines:
| Marks (%) | Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| 85 and above | A | 4.00 |
| 80–84 | A- | 3.66 |
| 75–79 | B+ | 3.33 |
| 71–74 | B | 3.00 |
| 68–70 | B- | 2.66 |
| 64–67 | C+ | 2.33 |
| 61–63 | C | 2.00 |
| 58–60 | C- | 1.66 |
| 54–57 | D+ | 1.30 |
| 50–53 | D | 1.00 |
| Below 50 | F | 0.00 |
Universities are allowed some freedom here. Some use slightly different marks cut-offs, and some give 3.7 for A- or 3.3 for B+ instead of 3.66 and 3.33. Always check the grading table in your own university’s examination rules or on the back of your transcript. In our calculator you can type the grade points directly (for example 3.7) if your university’s scale differs.
Credit hours and quality points
Each course carries credit hours, usually 2, 3 or 4, roughly matching the contact hours per week. A 3 credit course counts three times as much as a 1 credit lab. Credit hours × grade points gives the quality points (sometimes called grade points earned) for that course.
That’s why a good grade in a 4 credit course lifts your GPA more than the same grade in a 2 credit course, and why failing a heavy course hurts so much.
Worked example: one semester
| Course | Credit hours | Grade | Grade points | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 3 | A- | 3.66 | 10.98 |
| Programming | 4 | B+ | 3.33 | 13.32 |
| English | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Physics | 3 | B | 3.00 | 9.00 |
| Islamic Studies | 2 | A | 4.00 | 8.00 |
| Total | 15 | 53.30 |
GPA = 53.30 ÷ 15 = 3.55. Notice that a simple average of the five grade points would give a different answer, because it ignores credit hours.
How to calculate CGPA
CGPA (cumulative GPA) = total quality points from every semester ÷ total credit hours from every semester. If you already know your CGPA, you don’t need every old course. Multiply your old CGPA by the credit hours it covers to get your old quality points, then add the new semester:
- Previous: 66 credit hours at CGPA 3.21 = 211.86 quality points
- This semester: 15 credit hours, 53.30 quality points
- New CGPA = (211.86 + 53.30) ÷ (66 + 15) = 265.16 ÷ 81 = 3.27
Don’t just average your GPAs
Averaging semester GPAs only works if every semester had the same credit hours. Say you earned 3.1 over 17 credit hours, 3.4 over 18 credit hours, 2.9 over 16 credit hours. The simple average is 3.13, but the correct CGPA is 160.3 ÷ 51 = 3.14. The difference is small here, but it grows when semester loads vary a lot, for example a light summer semester.
What GPA do you need to reach a target CGPA?
You can run the formula backwards to plan ahead. Required GPA = (target CGPA × total credit hours after the semester − quality points so far) ÷ credit hours this semester.
Continuing the example, you have 81 credit hours at 3.27. To reach a CGPA of 3.40 after another 18 credit hour semester, you need (3.40 × 99 − 265.16) ÷ 18 = 3.97 that semester. The further you are into your degree, the harder it is to move your CGPA, so early semesters matter a lot.
Minimum CGPA under HEC rules
Under the HEC guidelines, the minimum CGPA needed to complete a BS degree is 2.0, and for MS/MPhil it is 2.5. Universities set their own rules on probation, dropping out, repeating courses and improving grades, so read your university’s regulations as well.
Converting CGPA to percentage
There is no single official formula for turning a CGPA into a percentage. Different universities print different conversion rules on their transcripts, and many don’t convert at all. If a job form or admission form asks for a percentage, use the method your university states, or ask its examination department for a letter. Avoid copying a general formula from the internet, since it may not match your university’s rule. For general percentage maths, such as marks obtained out of total marks, use the percentage calculator or read our guide to percentage calculation.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good CGPA in Pakistan?
Under HEC rules, 2.0 is the minimum to complete a BS and 2.5 for MS/MPhil. Many scholarships and further study programmes ask for 3.0 or higher, but each sets its own requirement.
What GPA is 80 percent?
On the HEC scale, 80 to 84% is an A- worth 3.66 grade points. 85% and above is an A worth 4.00.
How do I calculate CGPA from semester GPAs?
Multiply each semester’s GPA by its credit hours, add these together and divide by the total credit hours. The GPA calculator does this if you enter your previous credit hours and CGPA.
Is there an official CGPA to percentage formula?
No single formula applies to all universities. Use the method your own university gives on the transcript or in its rules, or ask its examination department.
